Man driving wrong way on Interstate 5 killed
in head-on crash

June 18, 2018

Chronicle staff

(LACEY, WA.) – The Washington State Patrol says a man from Louisiana was killed early Sunday morning in a head-on crash on I-5 that occurred because he was driving the wrong way on the freeway.

The crash happened about 4:40 am Sunday on Interstate 5 just northwest of Lacey, Washington in Thurston County.

The patrol report says a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling, for reasons unknown, the wrong way in the northbound lanes of I-5 from milepost 109 in lane three or three just as a 2008 Toyota 4-Runner was southbound on the freeway just north of Carpenter Road NE in lane three of three when the Malibu crashed head-on into the 4-Runner.

The crash left the southbound lanes blocked for over four hours. Killed was the driver of the Malibu identified as 28-year old Courtney J. Brown of New Orleans, Louisiana. At the time of the fatal crash Brown was on active duty with the US Marine Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Injured and taken to St. Peters hospital was the driver of the Toyota, a 16-year old girl from Chehalis, Washington.

The patrol report says it’s not known if alcohol or drugs were factors in the Malibu driver driving the wrong way on the freeway.
