Look Before You Lock That Car

(REGIONAL) – Our thanks to the National Weather Service for the life-saving graphic at right.

Every year in this country an average of 37 children die in hot cars with 88 percent of those victims aged three and under. And who knows how man dozens, maybe hundreds of beloved family pets ended up dead in a hot car or truck while their owner “just ran inside the store real quick to pick up some milk and eggs.”

Of children who die, over 50% of them were unknowingly left in the vehicle by an adult and about one-third got into the vehicle on their own. Other victims of hot car deaths include the elderly and those with special needs.

Think of the inside of a vehicle during the summer months as like a greenhouse sitting out in the sun. The thing heats up to deadly temperatures within minutes even on “mild” days. And on a 90-degree day the interior of a parked car can soar to a deadly 115 degrees within 15 minutes.

Look before you lock that car and walk away from it.
