Language Matters:
It speaks of truth, lies
and more

May 24, 2018

Chronicle staff

(NATIONAL) – A “high” way of talking and a “low” way of talking. What exactly is it about Donald Trump’s strangely ‘adolescent' way of speaking?

Why has America never seen a President before Trump that speaks the way Trump does?

After you’ve read today’s interesting Chronicle feature story here here about what the Associated Press claims is a fabricated story about a “spy” spoken by none other than the President of the United States, you may be interested in revisiting this MSNBC 2017 interview with Columbia University professor of linguistics John McWhorter who examines Donald Trump’s speech patterns to reveal one way in which Trump is unlike any president America's had in the past.

Spoiler alert: even in the most primitive of societies, those without any form of writing, there is a “high” way of talking and a “low” way of talking. The chief of a tribe just doesn’t get up “and run his mouth: ours does,” says McWhorter.
