(KENT, WA.) – A Police Officer for the city of Kent was killed in the line of duty this (Sunday) morning in a crash on State Route 516.
Just before 7:00 am Sunday Kent police released the following statement:
“It is with great heartbreak that the Kent Police Department announces that we have lost one of our officers in the line of duty early this morning. The Patrol Officer was assisting with the capture of subjects who were attempting to elude the police when he was struck by a vehicle. Life- saving efforts were not successful.
The Officer is an eight year veteran with Kent Police; his contributions to our department, and positive impact on his co-workers and the community, have been significant...a second officer, injured in the line of duty during this incident, is currently being treated by medical personnel and is in stable condition.”
Since this story was written, Kent Police have identified the officer that died as Diego Moreno and released a statement Sunday that said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Diego Moreno. He was part of our family and we will always have him in our hearts. Please continue to keep Officer Moreno, his family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.”
Officer Moreno is survived by his wife and his two young children.
Broadcast TV reports said the deadly incident began around 1:50 am as Kent Police Officers responded to a report of gunfire in the area of Russell Road South & and West Meeker Street.
KCPQ-TV reported that at the time of the 911 call, there was an officer in the area who heard gunshots and that officer saw a red truck speeding away from a parking lot; a truck that a witness told the officer might have been involved in the shooting incident.
The story says, according to the state patrol, that officer (later identified as Moreno) was deploying “spike strips” in the area and was hit by a Kent patrol vehicle as the suspect vehicle continued driving east on Kent Des Moines Rd., where it crashed near Washington Avenue.
One suspect was arrested, according to the TV station report.
