BREAKING NEWS | | HURRICANE EARL WEAKENS SOME AS IT APPROACHES MASSACHUSETTS September 03, 2010

(NATIONAL) -- Forecasters now say Hurricane Earl has weakened somewhat and may not be packing as serious a jolt as had been expected to the Massachusetts coastline when it arrives late tonight.
The National Weather Service said today that Earl is predicted to be down to a Category 1 hurricane when it moves across the ocean some 50 to 100 miles west of Nantucket Island and outer Cape Cod.
The weather service said those are the only two areas where a brief period of hurricane-force wind gusts - slightly more than 74 miles mph - are expected.
The rest of the southern portion of the state may experience see tropical storm wind gusts of 50 to 70 miles per hour, still enough to cause serious damage to structures and be dangerous to people, pets and livestock.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rains of up to 6 inches over a 6-hour period and cause heavy surf and dangerous currents along the coastline.
Dangerous conditions on beaches are forecast to persist into Saturday, and then begin slowly tapering off on Sunday and Monday.
