BREAKING NEWS | | GUARD OPENS FIRE ON MAN TRYING TO ROB ARMORED TRUCK IN SEATTLE February 08, 2010

(SEATTLE, WA) -- A guard opened fire during an attempted robbery of an armored truck Sunday morning in Seattle, critically wounding the suspect.
Police say a dozen patrol cars responded to the scene just after the shooting about 10:30 a.m. at 52nd Street and Rainier Avenue.
Police say from what they were able to piece together from witnesses, the incident began when a heavy-set man approached the armored truck guard outside a local business at about 10:30 a.m.
There was some type of confrontation at that point between the man and the guard, and then the suspect tried to grab a money bag from the guard, said Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt.
The guard told police he was afraid for his life and drew and fired his gun at the suspect.
The suspect was shot at least three times in the chest, arm and shoulder, seriously wounding the man.
The suspect lost considerable blood as he lay on the ground. It was not immediately clear if the suspect was armed and witnesses who saw the incident said it wasn't clear if the suspect actually posed a serious threat to the guard.
Eyewitnesses said there was an argument and confrontation between the two and that the argument continued for a while, during which time the suspect did not back off. Eventually the guard opened fire, witnesses said.
Witnesses said they heard four shots and then the heavy-set suspect stumbled and fell to the ground, bleeding profusely.
Medics quickly arrived and transported the suspect to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Later he was listed in critical condition.
Now Seattle police are questioning both men to see if the shooting was self-defense or something else.
Investigators say the guard is in his 20s and has worked for the armored truck company for three years.
