(SEATTLE, WA) -- Former Seattle SuperSonics coach and NBA star player Bill Russell was arrested Wednesday night at Sea-Tac Airport for allegedly carrying a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage.

Russell, 79, was arrested just after 9 p.m. when Transportation Security Administration workers say they found a loaded .38 caliber revolver in his carry-on bag.

After the discovery, Port of Seattle Police arrested and cited Russell, a Mercer Island resident, whose gun was confiscated. He was released that night according to an airport spokesman.

Guns are not allowed on carry on luggage for air flights however they can be legally, following strict procedures, stored unloaded in checked baggage.
