ELECTION RESULTS NATIONAL:
Democrats hit some homers around the country

November 08, 2017

Chronicle staff

(NATIONAL) -- Democrats are a hoopin' and a hollerin' around the country today. The headline from thehill.com says it all about Tuesday's election results around the nation: "Dems win from coast to coast."

If this is a preview about how unhappy Americans are with President Donald Trump (whose approval ratings remain in the cellar) and his Republican controlled Congress, the GOP may have reason to worry about some states going forward.

As The Hill put it: "The breadth of the Democratic wins surprised even the most optimistic party stalwarts, who fretted over their own chances in key races Tuesday. But as the results rolled in, those Democrats said they had energized their core voters and capitalized on President Trump's unpopularity to reach swing voters."

The New York Times headline reads," Voters Give Democrats First Big Victories Of Trump Era," saying that the results show American voters "first forceful rebuke of President Trump and his party...with Democrats exploiting Mr. Trump’s deep unpopularity to capture the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey and make significant inroads into suburban communities that once favored the Republican Party."

To wit: Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam won the Virginia governorship by a wider-than-expected margin (the Times called it the "crowning success of the night" for Dems) and another Democrat, Justin Fairfax won the lieutenant governor's race thus becoming only the second black American to win a statewide post in Virginia since the days of Reconstruction.

The Attorney General Mark Herring, also a Democrat won re-election.

Democrats also won at least 14 seats in Virginia's House of Delegates and another three races are so close they may go to recount.

Talking to supporters after his win Northam said, “Virginia has told us to end the divisiveness, that we will not condone hatred and bigotry — and to end the politics that have torn this country apart,"

Democrats also picked up at least two seats in New Jersey's state Senate, with several Senate and Assembly districts yet to count ballots, and a seat in New Hampshire's state House.

Georgia Democrats won races in two red districts in special state House elections.

In New Jersey, a Democrat and former Goldman Sachs executive Phil Murphy was victorious and will replace the now highly unpopular Gov. Chris Christie who was once considered an up and coming star in the GOP.

The Dems also picked up at least two seats in New Jersey's state Senate. Other Senate and Assembly districts have yet to count ballots.

A GOP civil war coming?

What else does all this mean outside of possibly brighter prospects for Democrats moving forward?

The Daily Beast says a "GOP civil war" is coming and Tuesday night may have ensured it comes quicker.

Items from that Beast report:

"Busses aren’t known for blazing speeds. But the one that Ed Gillespie found himself under Tuesday night came faster than even the biggest cynic expected.

The former RNC Chairman suffered a brutal defeat to Lt. Governor Ralph Northam in the Virginia gubernatorial election on Tuesday. Only after, however, he was truly pulverized.
Shortly after the loss, President Donald Trump and his top allies began spinning the result as the result of Gillespie being insufficiently obedient to and appreciative of the Trump agenda."

“Trumpism is a cancer that will end your political career and steal your honor if you embrace it,” John Weaver, the top strategist for Governor John Kasich (R-OH) told The Daily Beast. “Republicans should hold dear to their time honored fidelity to the constitution and personally to their soul and turn their backs on Trump for the sake of the country first and the party second. The results in Virginia were the first step toward redemption for the party, though I fear 2018 will be such a shellacking that it will be the true wake up call.”
