(TACOMA, WA.) -- The Memorial Procession Route for slain Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel McCartney starts at 11 a.m. Wednesday (today).

The sheriff's office says, "The public is strongly encouraged to line the route to give your respects & show your support to the McCartney family. Please come out - we can't put into words how much it means to the family & to all of us."

Parking for the memorial service itself, to honor & celebrate the life of Deputy McCartney will only be available at Church of All Nations on 112th St. E. in Parkland. There will be no parking available at PLU or on the streets surrounding Olson Auditorium.

Shuttles from Church of All Nations to PLU will start at 11:15 a.m.

Also note that seating in Olson Auditorium is limited. Overflow will be redirected to other buildings on campus where the service will be live streamed.

Late Sunday evening Jan. 7, 2018 Deputy McCartney was shot and critically injured while responding to a 911 call about intruders into a home in Frederickson. In pursuit of two intruders, McCartney exchanged gunfire with at least one suspect and was critically wounded. He passed away hours later at a Tacoma hospital.

The Pierce County Sheriff's office says Deputy McCartney, a 34-year husband and father of three children was wearing body armor that night but he was shot above the armor and "could not have survived the wound."

McCartney was on patrol alone that evening. Sheriff Pastor has since said his department is understaffed and spread thin due to the large geographic area his deputes have to patrol.

Legacy Fund established for the deputy's family

A Legacy Fund had been established for the family of Deputy Daniel McCartney. Donations can be made online at http://tpcrimestoppers.com or at any TAPCO Credit Union. One hundred percent of donations go directly to McCartney's wife and three young sons.

This is the only official fund supported by the PCSD & his family.
