Cold Case Arrest In 30-Year Old Murder Of
Young Girl

July 16, 2018

Suspect John D. Miller, 59, of Grabill, Indiana
(NATIONAL) -- DNA evidence has once again helped law enforcement to reach across decades and finally make an arrest of a suspect in a very old murder case.

In Indiana, some thirty years after the murder of 8-year-old April Tinsley in 1988, police arrested a man in connection with her death.

Ironically, the arrest came on the same day that cold case was to be examined during a prime-time crime documentary, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The suspect, John D. Miller, 59, of Grabill, Indiana was arrested at his home Sunday morning by members of the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police, according to the newspaper report.

That was just hours before the cable channel Investigation Discovery (ID) was scheduled to air a segment of the series “On The Case with Paul Zahn” about the search for a killer who taunted law enforcement for years after the girl’s murder.

Some items from the report:

~ The killer of the girl “menaced the community for years by leaving threatening notes.”

~ Investigators say they have DNA evidence linking Mr. Miller to the girl. When police officers asked the 59-year-old Miller if he knew why they were at his home that day, he reportedly responded, "April Tinsley.”

~ Miller agreed to speak with police in Fort Wayne and reportedly made incriminating statements about abducting, assaulting and killing the 8-year old.

~ April's body was found in a ditch some 20 miles from her Fort Wayne neighborhood three days after she disappeared in April of 1988.
As investigators worked to find the killer and make an arrest, they were “taunted by messages left by the alleged killer. "I kill 8-year-old April Marie Tinsley. I will kill again," read one message on a barn door in 1990, according to the Star.”

~ The newspaper also reported that the suspected murderer left “notes, photos of a man's partial naked body and used condoms on girls' bicycles and in a mailbox in 2004.”

~ One note released by the FBI read, "Hi honey. I been watching you. I am the same person that kidnapped, raped and killed April Tinsely. You are my next victim."

A recent search of Miller's garbage led police to a DNA match in the case, He is being held in Allen County and was expected to appear in court today.
