Kirkland, WA police arrest woman trying to kidnap toddler in park

March 02, 2018

(KIRKLAND,WA) – Kirkland Police arrested a woman Thursday after she allegedly assaulted a woman and tried to kidnap the woman’s toddler.

It happened at Bridle Trails State Park in Kirkland just before noon. A police statement says a mother was in the park with her two and a half year-old son, her two month old baby and their grandmother.

“The grandmother was walking with the toddler on a trail when an unknown female hit her on the head from behind and ran off with the little boy,” said the police statement. “The toddler’s mother was in her vehicle with the baby when she observed the strange women running with her son. The grandmother was chasing after the female when the mother also began to run toward the women.”

A scuffle then ensued and the mother was able to get her son back and move away, with the graandmother, from the woman who had grabbed her son.

Minutes later, a Kirkland Police Officer on routine patrol drove entered the Bridle Trails parking lot off of 116th Ave. and saw the mother standing in the parking lot with another women who witnessed the event. The mother was yelling her child was taken.

By then the grandmother was in the car with the two children when all of a sudden the suspected kidnapper reappeared from the wooded area and the officer took the woman into custody without further incident.

The female suspect is 33-years-old and is “known to police by prior contacts.”

The statement says the woman may be suffering from mental illness and is currently living out of her vehicle.

The victims in this case were not harmed other than some abrasions to the grandmother’s head.  Fortunately, the mother and grandmother were able to retrieve the boy from the suspect without harm and the suspect was not able to leave the area before being contacted and arrested by police.

Police says the investigation is ongoing with felony charges to follow.
