BREAKING NEWS

COMMERCIAL RIGS MUST SUBMIT TO ROADCHECK THIS WEEK
June 02, 2009

(OLYMPIA, WA) -- For 72 continuous hours starting today and running through June 4th law enforcement officers from Canada to Mexico will be participating in the annual commercial vehicle “ROADCHECK.”

“ROADCHECK” is an event sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) which mobilizes federal, state and local inspectors across the state to conduct comprehensive North American Standard Level I Inspections and other related roadside enforcement activities.

ROADCHECK is the largest targeted commercial vehicle enforcement program in the world.

During ROADCHECK approximately 14 trucks or buses are inspected every minute from Canada to Mexico during a 72-hour period in early June.

Each year approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors at 1,500 locations across North America perform truck and bus inspections.

Roadside inspectors patrolling Washington’s highways will be driving home a clear message to commercial truck and bus operators: “Operate safely on Washington’s highways or you will be stopped.”

“Every year dedicated Washington State Patrol and local law enforcement officers perform roadside inspections which save countless lives and make Washington’s highways among the safest in the nation,” said Captain Darrin Grondel, Commercial Vehicle Division Commander in a statement about the 72-hour event.

“We see great results because of the cooperation between industry and local, state and federal government agencies, “ Grondel added.

CVSA sponsors ROADCHECK with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).

ROADCHECK is one of a series of activities whereby CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo safety and security. Since starting “ROADCHECK” in 1988 there have been over one-million roadside inspections.

ROADCHECK has also provided safety events to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program. It has also provided opportunity for the distribution of countless pieces of educational literature.
