BREAKING NEWS | | CLOSING ARGUMENTS IN TRIAL OF SERIAL KILLER AND WINNER ON TV’S “DATING GAME” March 09, 2010

(SANTA ANA, CA) -- Closing arguments in the penalty phase of the trial of convicted serial killer Rodney Alcala, 66, are set to begin Tuesday.
The jury will decide whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison for the one time winner of TV’s “Dating Game” in the late 1960’s.
Alcala was convicted Feb. 25 for the third time of killing 12-year-old Robin Samsoe in Huntington Beach June 20, 1979. He was twice before convicted in the case but the convictions were overturned on appeal.
Alcala was also convicted of killing four other women between 1977 and 1979. In a strange court room moment Monday Alcala issued a shocking apology of sorts to one of his victims.
Nearly 50 years after he brutally beat, molested and left for dead an 8-year old Hollywood girl Alcala apologized to her.
"I sincerely regret the harm I caused you and I apologize for my despicable behavior," Alcala told the victim during his cross examination after she testified about her 1968 ordeal."
The victim did not respond or look at Alcala directly. Alcala sexually assaulted and beat her with a 12-inch pipe in 1968. He fled to the East Coast after that but was arrested in 1971.
KTLA-TV Los Angeles produced the video story below on Alcala’s trial:
Alcala was the first contestant to be introduced in a 1968 episode of TV’s then hit show “The Dating Game,”
"Bachelor No. 1 is a successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the dark room at the age of 13, fully developed," host Jim Lange said. "Between takes you might find him skydiving or motor-cycling. Please welcome Rodney Alcala.”
Alcala won the date with the woman who was the guest in that episode but she later refused to go out with Alcala on a date.
