(INTERNATIONAL) -- The Syrian army launched an attack on the city of Homs early on Saturday morning, bombing with tanks the protest center and killing at least 260 people and wounding hundreds of others in a bloody "massacre", according to witnesses and European reports.

It is said to be the biggest one-day massacre of the Syrian Democratic Uprising.

One report said the bombing began when 50 soldiers defected and ran away to the district of Khalidiya and in revenge the Army began bombing the entire district.

Thee Syrian government has denied involvement in the violence, blaming "armed gunmen" for the violence.

If the death toll is confirmed, the bombing would mark the bloodiest day of the 10-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Protesters stormed Syrian embassies in five locations - Berlin, Athens, Cairo, Kuwait and London - as the Syrian National Council opposition group called on the world to intervene to stop a brutal suppression campaign which protesters say has killed at least 6,000 people since March.

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Saturday on a resolution condemning the repression.
