(INTERNATIONAL) -- Wikileaks may have spawned a revolution in the business of finding and releasing to the public files that were never intended to see the light of day.

Now, instead of a military agency being the victim of someone leaking its files, there is a military service leaking it’s own data to the public.

New Zealand’s military this week released thousands of documents covering more than half century of reports of UFO sightings by New Zealand residents.

Included in the thousands of documents is the nation’s most well known UFO mystery that happened in 1978 in the southern island town of Kaikoura.

A cargo plane reported strange lights following it and air traffic controllers on the ground saw radar blips near the aircraft they could not explain.

New Zealand's Defense Force released the files Wednesday under a freedom of information request.
