BREAKING NEWS | | 17 ARRESTED IN PROTESTS AT STATE CAPITOL April 08, 2011

(OLYMPIA, WA) -- Seventeen people were arrested Thursday at the Washington State capitol in Olympia as the third day of protests ensued over proposed budget cuts.
Unions and others accuse politicians of trying to make labor the scapegoat for the Great Recession while leaving Wall Street “banksters” untouched after they made Billions from "black-box derivatives" and other exotic financial instruments that helped bring down the U.S. economy.
Legislators in Olympia are trying to close a $5 Billion hole in the state budget doe the Great Recession.
In addition to the arrests about 30 people were escorted outside the capitol by state troopers for making a ruckus during the legislative session.
The protests are over proposed cuts to state-funded health services.
Today members of Teamsters Local 117 will meet at the Union hall in Tukwila at 10:00 a.m. to carpool to a “Put The People First” rally in Olympia.
The union, in a message to members said, “This is your chance to stand up and fight the attack on working families!”
In a statement posted on Local 117’s website union officials said, “The cynical attempt to destroy the American middle class in Wisconsin and elsewhere is having reverberations across the country. Working people from Ohio to Indiana to Idaho are fighting back.
In Washington State, Union members, including dozens of Teamsters, have attended solidarity rallies at the State Capitol in Olympia.
The stakes of this fight are high as political renegades like Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin and their corporate cronies attempt to strip working people of their hard-earned wages, benefits, and right to bargain collectively.
Washingtonians understand that a shift in the political landscape in our state could have a similarly devastating impact on our fundamental rights as workers.”
