THE POWER OF THE STATES
By Gary Johnson, former Governor New Mexico

July 27, 2010

As the Governor of New Mexico, I spent eight years dealing with issues unique and specific to our state – addressing immigration, education, the privatization of our prison system, ways to streamline state agencies, and keeping our spending under control.

During those eight years, we proved that, with a little common sense and by embracing the reality that government is not the answer to every question, spending can be controlled, bureaucracy can be reduced, and individuals can manage their own lives.

Last December, after growing not just alarmed, but angry at the direction of the current government in Washington, we launched the OUR America Initiative to help give voice to those same ideas I put to work in New Mexico.

TIME TO END UNDERWRITING THE BAD DEBTS AND FINANCIAL FOLLIES OF THE WELL OFF?

July 12, 2010

“The rich are different from you and me. They know how to game the system.”

So begins an interesting piece in the New York Times by Ross Douthat that brings to light the crazy old uncle in the attic that the rich don't want talked about and the lower and middle classes usually know nothing about; namely that working stiffs - thanks to various tax laws and other laws - spend a lot of money subsidizing the lifestyles of the rich and near rich in America.

Douthat humorously calls his piece “The Class War We Need.” Perhaps he’s right.

CONSUMER SPENDING IS FLAT, UNEMPLOYMENT IS RISING: THE CASE FOR A 2ND ROUND OF ECONOMIC STIMULUS
By Mike Whitney

July 02, 2010

In an op-ed in last Thursday's Wall Street Journal titled "U.S. Debt and the Greece Analogy", Maestro Greenspan made the case for fiscal belt-tightening and disputed leading economists, like Nobel prize winners Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz, who believe that the Obama administration should provide a second round of stimulus.

In the opening paragraph, Greenspan dismisses the idea that cuts in government spending will push the economy back into recession. Here's an excerpt:

BP’S UNNATURAL DISASTER: TRUSTING OIL COMPANIES TO DO THE RIGHT THING TO BEGIN WITH?

May 30, 2010

”How is it possible for anyone with any reasonable awareness of the nonstop carnage that has accompanied the entire history of giant corporations to believe that the oil companies, which are among the most rapacious players on the planet, somehow “had their act together” with regard to worst-case scenarios?

These are not Little Lord Fauntleroys who can be trusted to abide by some fanciful honor system. These are greedy merchant armies drilling blindly at depths a mile and more beneath the seas while at the same time doing all they can to stifle the government oversight that is necessary to protect human lives and preserve the integrity of the environment…(the oil companies) do not have the best interests of the American people in mind when they are closing in on the kinds of profits that ancient kingdoms could only envy. BP’s profits are counted in the billions annually. They are like stacks and stacks of gold glittering beneath a brilliant sun. You don’t want to know what people will do for that kind of money. “

Such begins a scathing indictment by New York Times op-ed writer Bob Herbert.

AMERICANS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH TRUTH

May 22, 2010

By John Cozy

Americans have a problem with the truth. They seem to be unable to accept it, which is difficult to understand at a time in history when knowledge plays a larger and larger role in determining human action. Recognition of this problem is widespread.

Beliefs and lies somehow always overwhelm truth, even when they are so contradictory that any effective action becomes impossible. A kind of national, psychological paralysis occurs. Nothing can be done because one belief contradicts another, and for some unknown reason, the facts don't matter.
