MONROE’S FAIR DAYS PARADE

August 29, 2009

Saturday August 29, 2009 was a great day for a parade in Monroe. Not too hot, not to cool and with a slight overcast to give those color photos a nice soft look without too much glare or contrast.

And thus it was that such a day brought out exactly 9,428 people (we counted each and every person) to watch the annual Monroe Fair Days Parade on Main Street in Monroe.

All right. So we didn’t exactly count each and every person. Still, it seemed like a LOT of folks were there; a cast of thousands would be an accurate shot at the body count.

And as always, the Sky Valley Chronicle’s intrepid shooters (yes, danger is our business) were on hand to bring you the first video and still picture looks at the parade.

WHERE THE LION SLEEPS AND MAN WALKS

August 29, 2009

These are images you won’t see every day. Just a regular guy and his 38 lions. Kevin Richardson of South Africa has an animal preserve not far from Johannesburg where he studies animal behavior.

And even though so-called “tamed” wild lions (animals raised in captivity) are still wildly unpredictable (as Siegfried & Roy and many others have tragically discovered) Richardson routinely puts himself at risk wading into the pride. Fun to watch but you wouldn’t catch us doing it. Momma didn’t raise no fools. Well, at least not any get yourself eaten for lunch by a lion kinda fool.
