AN AMERICAN DREAM

January 19, 2009

A dream.

A dream deeply rooted in the American dream. A dream with truths that are self-evident.

Today is a federal holiday in honor of the late Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and this video puts those powerful, historic words of his - the words of the memorable “I have a dream” speech – into an interesting perspective.

Years and years from now Americans will hear King’s voice speaking those historic words from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on a hot August day in 1963 and perhaps say to themselves, “Well of course. What the man is saying is simply common sense. He is talking about simple justice, equal opportunity and basic freedom in a country that cherishes freedom. What in the world was wrong with Americans in that century that they could not see what was so obviously right? They must have been terribly uneducated back then.”

It is a shame the Reverend King did not live to see another history making event tomorrow in Washington D.C. when Barack Obama places his hand upon Abraham Lincoln’s bible and is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States and the nation’s first African American President.

DON'T CURSE THE DARKNESS, LIGHT A CANDLE!

This is the easiest way we've ever seen to make your own gorgeous, eco-friendly scented candles at half the cost (or less) they charge for them in upscale stores. With adult supervision this would make a good project for the kids, maybe even a part time home business if you have a retail outlet for the finished product.

R & B REDUX: A CHANGE IS GONNA COME

January 12, 2009

One of the best cover versions of a great R & B classic you’ll ever hear. This is Seal’s cover of “A Change Is Gonna Come” and old Sam Cooke tune. Seal gives a masterful touch here, breathing new life into an old classic.

“A Change Is Gonna Come” was a 1964 release by R&B singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, written and first recorded in 1963 and released under the RCA Victor label shortly after his death in late 1964. It was only a modest hit for Cooke in comparison with his previous singles yet the song came to exemplify the sixties Civil Rights Movement.

So the story goes, Cooke was impressed when he heard Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" in 1963 and was fascinated that such a song about racism could come from a white man. While on tour in May 1963, and after speaking with sit-in demonstrators in Durham, North Carolina following a concert, Cooke returned to his tour bus and wrote the first draft of what would later become "A Change Is Gonna Come."

It is said the song reflects two major incidents in Cooke’s life. The first was the death of Cooke's eighteen-month-old son, Vincent, who died of an accidental drowning in June of 1963. The second major incident came on October 8, 1963, when Cooke and his band tried to register at a "whites only" motel in Shreveport, Louisiana and were summarily arrested for disturbing the peace.
