A VERY STRANGE CAT
March 04, 2009
This is without a doubt the strangest looking cat we have ever seen. Someone in Exeter, New Hampshire owns it. Has it been bred to look this way? An illness perhaps? There is trouble with the audio on this video so all you have is the visual but the visual is enough. Click READ MORE to bring up the video player
JAILHOUSE BLUES AT SEA TAC
March 03, 2009
Justifiable restraint of an inmate or assault? You be the judge. In November of last year a 15-year old girl was in a jail cell at SeaTac just south of Seattle, having been arrested in connection with an auto theft.
While she was in the cell (standing with arms folded and talking with a deputy through the open cell door) she was rushed by a much larger King County Sheriff’s deputy who grabbed her by the hair, slammed her face/head into a wall, threw her violently down on the floor face first and while she was face down on the ground not resisting (and while she was being held in that position by not one but two much larger officers) the deputy who rushed the girl proceed to smash his fist into her head and neck area twice. He then jerked her up by the hair and hustled her out the door.
The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera but was released by prosecutors just last week in the case against Deputy Paul Schene, who is accused of using excessive force. Schene, 31, pleaded innocent to fourth-degree assault.
Malika Calhoun, 16, said Monday on CBS' "The Early Show" the attack (that began after she kicked off a shoe in the direction of the deputy) was "horrible."
"I was yelling. I was like, `This isn't - I'm not resisting, I'm not resisting,' and he said, `whether you're resisting or not, that was assault,"' Calhoun said. "Then he just kept doing it and kept going and going."
Since the release of the videotape the U.S. Justice Department has since started a federal probe into what happened in that cell.
Note: it should go without saying the reason this kind of thing makes news is precisely because it is a deviation from normal behavior in most modern jails. The 99% of the time officers do their job and do it well and fairly and with compassion never makes the news. Don't assume this kind of action is SOP at the Sea-Tac jailhouse.
UPDATE 09/29/09: Since this video was posted the King County Sheriff's deputy who is seen on the video pummeling the young girl, Paul Schene, has been fired. Sheriff spokesman John Urquhart said deputy Schene was fired for a number of policy violations, including the beating incident captured on video.
The department violations Schene was fired for included making false statements, conduct that is criminal in nature, excessive or unnecessary force and discrimination in civility or bigotry, among others, Urquhart said.
Schene was investigated previously for shooting two people - killing one - in the line of duty in 2002 and 2006. Both times his actions were found to be justified.
The second deputy seen in the video was a trainee at the time and was not under investigation.

THE CAUSE OF AMERICA'S ECONOMIC ILLS?
February 27, 2009
There are only a few views that mainstream media allows into national news coverage when it comes to the cause or causes of America’s economic meltdown of late. That is because mainstream media decided long ago (for all of us) who and what lies in “the sphere of deviance” (see Sky Valley Chronicle editorial dated 2/5/09 titled “Audience Atomization”).
So, not being part of mainstream media’s pre-packaged blah-blah-blah we present an entirely different view on the subject in this video.
Richard D. Wolff is an economist, author, and Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and New School University. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Paris I (Sorbonne).
He has authored or co-authored 10 books about economics and his recent work has concentrated on analyzing the causes and alternative solutions to the current global economic crisis.
While we profoundly disagree with Wolff’s conclusion about what he claims is the root cause of America’s current economic crisis, if you go and look at the numbers he’s talking about, the man is straight on the money that stagnating wages over the past 25 years for the middle class are a large part of America’s current sickness.
The video is pretty dry stuff with no production values (it looks like an Econ 101 lecture) but the information is rather interesting..

THE DAY AMERICA ALMOST DISAPPEARED
February 19, 2009
To this day millions of Americans remain blissfully unaware (ignorance is bliss?) how close America (as we know it) came to vanishing on September 18, 2008.
That day was the start of a chain of frightening events that came within a monkey's eyelash of seeing not only the entire American economy collapse like a house of cards (which it was and perhaps still is) but also the entire financial and banking system along with it.
