WHAT SPACE SOUNDS LIKE

February 23, 2013

(NATIONAL) -- It is an unexpected question. How many of us have ever heard the sounds of space? We've seen photos and paintings of space all our lives but most of us have never heard the sounds that our universe generates in deep outer space.

Even though space is a vacuum and human ears could not hear the sounds space makes, through radio waves scientists can "listen" to those sounds by changing the radio waves they capture into audio waves that the human ear can indeed hear.

Sounds like the sun in the midst of a massive solar flare.

It turns out that radio waves emitted from objects in space can be turned into sound by ordinary radio receivers, which contain amplifiers and speakers that convert those purely electrical signals into sound waves.

Optical astronomers use telescopes to look at the visible light emitted by stars, and "radio astronomers" use radio telescopes to detect radio waves.

In 2001 scientist Honor Harger and her artistic group radioqualia created Radio Astronomy that is designed to allow listeners to "hear" planets, stars and other deep space objects through different celestial radio frequencies.

THE STUNNING VOICE OF KATHI GOERTZEN’S DAUGHTER

August 16, 2012

We almost missed this one but thanks to a Chronicle reader we found it, saw it and were blown away by it.

If you live here in Washington State you are probably aware that one of Western Washington’s most beloved TV news anchors, Kathi Goertzen a 30-year veteran reporter and anchor at KOMO-TV News in Seattle passed away this week after a long illness.

Goertzen, a class act and a consummate professional, leaves behind a large, loving family and many friends in the Northwest.

One of Goertzen’s two young daughters is Alexa, now twenty-one years of age.

Alexa is a singer and in this undated video, which appears to have been done at her church or school, Alexa sings a gospel song with a voice and soulfullness far beyond her years.

The station, as a tribute to Kathi, put the tape of this song together with clips of Kathi through the years at KOMO TV.

The voice of Kathi's daughter Alexa is simply stunning for one so young.

And what a tribute to her mom.

BEAR WITH SWEET TOOTH LIKES CANDY SHOP

August 16, 2012

How smart are bears? Smart enough that if you have a door in a candy shop that does not properly latch when it closes, a bear will find that vulnerability, open the door and come inside again and again,

That’s what happened to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Estes Park, Colorado. A bear found a door did not close all the way and was caught on the store’s surveillance video coming in, eating the sweets, going out, and coming back in later to eat again.

The bear made seven trips to the shop in about 15 minutes, finally leaving after a passing car apparently scared him away.

But during those trips he ate piles of chocolate-covered treats and the only evidence he left behind was some dirt on the counter and some paper on the ground.
