PORTION OF I-5 BRIDGE OVER SKAGIT RIVER COLLAPSES
Three people rescued, no fatalities

(MOUNT VERNON, WA) -- A portion of the north end of a heavily traveled Interstate 5 bridge that spans the Skagit River between Mount Vernon and Burlington just north of Seattle collapsed Thursday night.

The collapse, just after 7 pm sent a portion of the bridge and several vehicles dropping into the frigid waters of the Skagit River.

"The good news is it appears there have been no fatalities," said Washington Governor Jay Inslee as he held an impromptu news conference at the bridge several hours after the collapse.
