Rape trial of former Wash. State Dept. of Fish & Wildlife executive begins Tuesday
December 31, 2017

(OLYMPIA, WA.) -- A trial is scheduled to begin in Olympia on Tuesday for a former Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife executive who is accused of raping a co-worker in December 2014.

Gregory A. Schirato, 55, is charged in Thurston County Superior Court with one count of second-degree rape and one count of first-degree burglary.

Schirato is a former division leader at the state agency and in the past had once had a sexual relationship with the victim, according to a report by the Olympian newspaper .

Police went to the victim's Olympia home on the morning of Dec. 18, 2014, after the woman reported that someone had broken into her home and raped her the night before.

In what appear to be a unique set of circumstances, the woman told police she'd been at a party until late that night and was intoxicated when she came home and fell asleep.

She said she woke up at some point to somebody touching her, believed it was her boyfriend and went back to sleep. When she woke up the next morning she says she found her pants were pulled down and her bra was unclasped, according to the newspaper report.

She called her boyfriend, who said he had not been at her house that night. She also found a window on her door was broken and so she called police, telling them that Schirato was an acquaintance and that he had been at the party on the night of the alleged rape.

She said that she and Schirato had previously had a sexual relationship. Police investigated and found DNA and some other evidence that eventually led to an arrest of Schirato and charges filed, according to the report.
