ANOTHER FATAL ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 2
August 10, 2008
(U.S. HIGHWAY 2) -- A Monroe man died last Friday evening in the latest fatal accident to occur on U.S. Highway 2 in the Sky Valley. Like many others in the past, this accident also occurred at the infamous junction of Highway 2 and Fern Bluff road.
The Washington State Patrol says the man who died, 32-year old Antonio Miranda, was driving his vehicle westbound on Highway 2 when it reportedly crossed he centerline and smashed into an SUV and from there careened into a pick up truck in the eastbound lane.
The driver of the pick up truck was a 60-year old Snohomish man who sustained injuries and was taken to Valley General Hospital for treatment. The occupants of the SUV were uninjured and did not require medical treatment.
It is unknown what caused Miranda’s vehicle to swerve across the centerline of the highway. The investigation into the accident continues.
The death of Miranda brings to 50 the number of fatal accidents on U.S. Highway 2 since 1999 between Stevens Pass and the city of Snohomish.
Between 1999 and early 2008, there had been 4,698 accidents – or about 522 a year on average – on Highway 2. The accidents produced an average death rate of 5.3 fatalities per year and an average of 12 disabling injuries per year. In that time period there were thousands more less serious injuries in vehicular accidents
