(GIG HARBOR, WA.) – Pierce County Sheriff’s detectives have requested the public’s help in finding the man responsible for an attempted burglary and a surprise assault on a homeowner in February.

At approximately 5:50 pm on Monday February 5th a woman was assaulted when she interrupted a burglary at her home on 149th Street NW in Gig Harbor.

“The victim was walking out of her garage when she was knocked to the ground by an unidentified male suspect,” said a statement from the sheriff’s office.”The suspect grabbed the victim’s throat with one hand and punched her in the face several times with his other hand.”

During the assault the woman was “able to arm herself with a pistol” and fired one shot into the ceiling of her garage -- and with that her attacker ran out and away.

It appears that, fortunately for the victim, her gun was the great equalizer in a disparity of force surprise attack at close quarters, even without the bullet traveling down barrel with hard aim at the attacker’s torso.

The woman described the man as a white male in his 60’s. See sketch at upper right. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and “smelled strongly of cigarette smoke,” says the sheriff’s office.

Of note: four days before the assault, a relative of the woman confronted a suspicious man on the woman’s property that may be the same suspect.

That man was in his 60’s, heavy set, 6’1” tall and had a scraggly beard, glasses, and dark graying hair.

Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County is offering a reward of up to $1000 dollars for information leading to the arrest and charges filed for the person in this case.

Call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), all callers will remain anonymous.
