(SEATTLE, WA.) –- As diamond thefts go, this one appeared to be very well planned and went down smooth as silk.

It was also a big money score for the perpetrators who got away clean.

About 3:48 pm on Tuesday of this week the Washington State Patrol (WSP) got a call from a citizen saying an attempted carjacking had occurred Westbound from State Route 520, at the very west end of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge to Northbound I-5 in the Eastlake area of Seattle.

Once troopers arrived they determined the crime that had occurred was actually a diamond theft and the victim was a gemstone salesman who’d been making his rounds carrying hundreds of thousands of dollars in product in his car.

“The victim stated he was traveling around the Seattle and Bellevue area to client/jewelers and was on his way to his last client in Seattle,” said WSP Trooper Rick Johnson. “He was exiting from WB SR 520 to NB I-5 when a dark colored sedan made an abrupt lane change and slammed on the brakes causing him to brake hard and come to a stop.”

At this time a second vehicle, part of the planned robbery, intentionally hit his car from behind and two men wearing bandanas approached his car. When they got there they broke out both front windows, hit the salesman several times and grabbedthe bag of diamonds worth $400,000 from under his leg along with the key fob for the car and his phone.

They robbers also made him open the trunk where they removed and took a large suitcase. The state patrol has not saidn what was in that suitcase.

Detectives tracked the salesman’s phone to 650 NE 42nd Street in Seattle where it was found abandoned in a grassy area.

The salesman was treated at the scene by the Seattle Fire Department then transported to the state patrol office where detectives took photos and interviewed him.

Detectives are seeking any additional witnesses or information about this crime, to include anyone that may have seen the phone thrown from a vehicle at the address on 42nd Street noted above.

Contact Detective Vik Mauro at (425) 401-7746 or by email at Victoria.mauro@wsp.wa.gov.
