(GOLD BAR, WA.) -- The Snohomish County Sheriff's office says a badly injured 38-year woman was rescued from a ledge near Wallace Falls Monday.
She had taken a fall and sustained critical injuries.
Personnel from the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit (SAR), Gold Bar Fire Dept. (Snohomish County Fire District 26) and Washington State Parks as well as volunteers from Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue, were deployed Monday afternoon after an emergency beacon was activated in Wallace Falls State Park in Gold Bar, Washington.
"The beacon was activated after a woman, who had been "canyoneering" with others, lost control of "braking" her climbing rope and fell several feet onto a ledge near the falls around 4 pm," said sheriff;s office spokeswoman Shari Ireton.
Ground crews reached the woman on foot while the Sheriff's Office helicopter, SnoHAWK10, delivered a medic to the woman's location.
The injured woman was then transported by SnoHAWK10 to the grounds of a school in Gold Bar, where she was then transferred to an AirLift Northwest helicopter.
The woman was then flown to Harborview Regional Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries, said Ireton.
Just last month, woman was swept to her death over Wallace Falls
The body of woman who lost her life when she was swept over Wallace Falls last month was found on Thursday July 27.
The 18-year old woman who'd been hiking with friends slipped on a rock Wednesday evening July 26, fell into the fast moving North Fork of the Wallace River an then over the falls to the rocks below.
Friends of the woman called 911 around 7:45 pm that Wednesday night and reported they had all climbed over the railing to cross the river to an island and as they were returning to the trail, they heard the woman cry out, followed by the sound of a splash in the water.
Various fire and Sheriff's Office units searched the area that evening until operations were suspended at nightfall.
The body of the woman was eventually found Thursday afternoon around 4 pm in a pool of water at the base of the lower falls.
"The woman's shoes and a GoPro stick were also found at the base of the falls," said Ireton who added that the woman was from Las Vegas, Nevada and was attending a local community college here in the state.
Wallace Falls: no stranger to hikers getting into trouble
In June of 2013 a Monroe, WA man escaped serious injury when he slipped and went over "the lower" Wallace Falls.
The park has a series of falls, nine in all, with two that are considered the most visually stunning and one that is the tallest at 265 feet.
In Sept. 2012 a young woman was spared serious injury when she fell into the lower Wallace Falls which drops 212 feet in five tiers.
In May of the same year, there was a dramatic rescue of a boy that made national news. He was perched for hours just inches away from the edge of Wallace Falls after almost going over that edge.
