TWO BAD ACCIDENTS ON HIGHWAY 2 JUST TWO MILES APART AND IN SAME HOUR ON TWO DIFFERENT DAYS
May 31, 2016
These two stories were first reported Sat. & Sun.
May 28 and 29 on the front page
(INDEX, WA.) -- What are the odds? Two different accidents on Highway two near Index, in almost the same spot and in the same hour on two successive days.
That's what happened over the long Memorial Day weekend, says the Washington State Patrol (WSP).
One man was injured and two vehicles were totaled in a three vehicle wreck on Highway two near Index over the weekend. This was the second of the two accidents.
It happened Sunday May 29th about 4:44 pm roughly ten miles east of Index on State Route 2.
The patrol report says a maroon 1989 Honda Accord 4-door and a white 1991 Tioga motor home were headed westbound on SR 2 when for reasons unknown a black 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck crossed the double yellow center line.
The Honda 4-door then tried to avoid a collision and was hit by the Silverado pickup in the area of the left rear passenger door.
The impact spun the Honda around, eventually coming to a stop in the eastbound lane of the highway while the Silverado pickup continued traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of the road.
The Tioga motor home tried to avoid hitting the Silverado by moving into the eastbound lane and was hit by the Silverado on its passenger side.
After that impact the Silverado continued heading eastbound in the westbound lane and struck a guard rail.
Injured in the accident was the driver of the Chevy Silverado pickup identified as 30-year old Brian P. Moriarty of Lake Tapps, Washington.
He was taken by aid car to a hospital in Everett then was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His vehicle was totaled in the accident.
Not injured was the driver of the maroon Honda identified as Tasha K. Hillestad of Seattle, whose vehicle was also totaled in the accident.
Also not injured was the driver of the Tioga motor home identified as Nolan C. Ward, of Lake Stevens, Washington.
The patrol report says the cause of the accident is under investigation. It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Marysville man dies on Highway 2 on previous day in almost same spot
Keeping in mind the above accident happened during the 4 pm hour about 10 miles from Index, here is the second of the two accidents that occurred over the weekend in almost the same spot and during the same hour.
This one was a fatality.
The WSP says a 28-year old Marysville man died Saturday afternoon May 28th in a single vehicle crash on Highway 2, this one happening just after 4 pm about 8 miles east of Index.
The patrol report says a purple 1996 Dodge Caravan was traveling eastbound on the highway when for reasons unknown it left the roadway to the right, hit a tree and rolled onto its roof.
The driver, from Marysville and the only occupant in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Early Sunday morning the state patrol identified the driver as 28-year old John M. Benveuti.
The report says the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The van was totaled. The state patrol said it was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
