(RUSSIA) -- While the mid western states in the U.S. are dealing with the first big snowstorm of the season – one that has shuttered schools and may end up in blizzard conditions Thursday morning for commuters from Kansas to Wisconsin – in Russia this year’s winter is so brutal that people are freezing to death.
Russia is engulfed in the harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures dropping as low as -50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit).
Dozens of people have already died and almost 150 have been hospitalized, according to Russia Television (RT TV). . The network reports that Russia hasn’t seen such a long cold spell since 1938 and that temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia.
Across the country, some 45 people have died due to the cold, and 266 have been taken to hospitals, according to RT TV.
Another Russian report said 542 people were injured due to the freezing temperatures.
The Moscow region saw temperatures of -17 to -18 degrees Celsius (1.4 and 0.4 F) on Wednesday, and record cold temperatures are expected to hang around for at least three more days.
In Siberia a –50 Celsius (-58 F) was recorded, which is also abnormal for the month of December.

It is so cold that if you were to throw boiling water into the air, it would vaporize into a white fog before the water hit the ground.
