(MONROE, WA) -- Snohomish County and the Allied Waste company honored six students during the opening day of the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe on Thursday for their winning essays in the “Living Evergreen” contest.

Divided into two categories – middle school students (grades 6-9) and high school students (grades 10-12) – contestants were asked to write about the growing need to be environmentally friendly.

(MARYSVILLE, WA) -- Snohomish County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a home invasion robbery Monday morning in the 8400 block of 27th Ave. NE in unincorporated Marysville.

Detectives believe the two males suspects were attempting to target a specific house, but entered the wrong one instead.

No one was injured in the incident.

One dead, 23 injured, over 50 homes leveled by massive fire fed by winds

(SAN BRUNO, CA) -- Many residents who were there when the explosion was heard and then seconds later saw blaze orange fill the sky the and felt intense heat roll through the neighborhood described the scene with the same words: inferno.

A huge explosion – now thought to have been caused by a gas line break – erupted into walls of towering flames Thursday night that engulfed and then consumed a San Bruno, California neighborhood that lies not far from the San Francisco International airport.

ALL SKY VALLEY SCHOOLS START NEW SCHOOL YEAR THIS WEEK

(MONROE, WA) -- Tomorrow, Wednesday Sept. 8, is the first day of the 2010-2011 school year for kids in the Snohomish, Monroe and Sultan districts here in the Sky Valley.

Also starting September 8th are the Arlington, Everett, Granite Falls (grades 1 through 9), Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor school districts. Thursday the Stanwood-Camano district opens the school year, as does Granite Falls high school.

Kids in the Index district got a jump start on the week and the year as their classes begin today, Tuesday Sept 7th. Classes start at 8:00 am in Index with breakfast served (at a cost) from 7:45 am through 8:00 am.

(INDEX, WA) -- It’s been a while coming but the deal is done. The Washington Climbers Coalition (WCC) announced Friday that it has succeeded in its campaign to buy the Index Lower Town Wall, a premier rock climbing area near Index in the upper Sky Valley of Snohomish County.

“Climbers have been working for more than fifteen years to buy the Lower Town Wall” said Darryl Cramer, a WCC board member and guidebook author who has climbed at the Lower Town Wall for nearly 30 years. “We’ve pulled it off and ensured that the Lower Town Wall will remain open to climbing forever.”

REITER FOREST REDEVELOPMENT CONTINUES

(INDEX, WA) -- Preliminary trail development continues at the Reiter Forest between Gold Bar and Index. DNR (the state department of natural resources) held another work party July 18 at which about a dozen volunteers came out to continue working on preliminary trail layout in the motorcycle and quad areas.

Volunteers also brushed several preliminary trail locations for 4x4s to provide easy access for the DNR and consultant design team.
